Updated : September 4, 2024

The Phase III expansion project of Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport achieved a significant milestone on Aug 28 with the full approval of its land use plan.

This ambitious project, initiated in 2020, is a key component of the "14th Five-Year Plan" and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Development Plan, with the objective of establishing a world-class airport cluster.

The expansion includes the construction of the fourth and fifth runways, the main structure of Terminal 3 (T3), and various supporting facilities across a total area of 2,727.55 mu (181.84 hectares). This project represents the largest single land-use project in Baiyun's history and involves multiple townships and economic cooperatives.

Key milestones achieved include the completion of the east and west concourses by Dec 31, 2023, the finalization of the T3 main structure by June 2024, and the opening of the off-site drainage project in Aug 2024. The project is projected to be fully operational by 2025, positioning Baiyun airport as the largest single airport globally.

Upon completion, Baiyun airport is set to feature five runways and two terminal areas, enhancing its passenger and cargo handling capacities to 120 million passengers and 3.8 million metric tons of cargo annually. The airport will integrate six high-speed rail lines, three intercity lines, one metro line, and two highways, solidifying its status as a world-class aviation hub.
