Guangdong license plates expected to drive directly into Hong Kong

Updated : March 20, 2025

Since the implementation of the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" policy in July 2023, things have been progressing smoothly.

More Hong Kong residents are choosing to live, do business, work, or travel in Chinese mainland, leading to an increase in the demand for driving back and forth, prompting the introduction of the policy. The policy allows private cars from Hong Kong to travel to and from Guangdong province on the Chinese mainland through the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB).

The number of new applications has exceeded 100,000, with approximately 96,000 vehicles completing the approval process and obtaining permits. The application process is entirely handled online, and in response to the demand, the number of daily applications has increased from 400 to 500 since the beginning of this year. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has been in close communication with relevant mainland departments, optimizing arrangements promptly to provide more convenient travel services for citizens.

Furthermore, the "Southbound Travel for Guangdong Vehicles" policy will be launched this year. The policy allows vehicles within Guangdong province to travel to and from Guangdong to Hong Kong through the HZMB.

In the initial phase, vehicles will enter and exit the automated parking lot at the Zhuhai port of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, unable to enter the urban area. They must return the same way when leaving. Guangdong province will gradually open applications in an orderly fashion, and applicants must leave Hong Kong within six months of entering.
