Guangzhou boosts kidney disease care with new medical center in Baiyun

Updated : March 16, 2026

Guangzhou is set to further strengthen its healthcare infrastructure with the forthcoming Guangzhou Kidney Disease Medical Center in Baiyun district, slated to open later this year.

The project has entered its final construction stage, with 95 percent of the work completed and interior finishing underway.

Located in the bustling Jingxi Street area, the center spans 65,000 square meters and comprises 22 floors above ground and four underground levels. Designed as a comprehensive hub for clinical care, research, and education, it will house a national key laboratory, a clinical medical research center, an academic exchange platform, an animal experiment center, and modern treatment facilities. This integrated "medical, academic, research, industrial, governmental" model aims to advance kidney disease prevention and treatment.

Led by Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Hou Fanfan, the medical team plans to address challenges in chronic kidney disease and accelerate the development of innovative therapies from the lab to the clinic. Despite complex urban geology, the project minimized community disruption through optimized construction planning and volunteer-led community initiatives, completing its main structure in just over four months.

Upon completion by late July 2026, the center will not only serve as a national benchmark for kidney disease care and research but will also provide patients with a convenient, patient-centered environment. This marks a significant step toward making high-quality, specialized healthcare more accessible to Guangzhou residents.

Meanwhile, Baiyun district has also inaugurated Guangdong's first ALS rehabilitation and care base at the local People's Hospital, creating a dedicated platform for comprehensive care and support for patients with rare neurological diseases.
