Baiyun boy takes home world team title
In the early hours of May 11, the Chinese men's table tennis team triumphed over Japan with a decisive 3-0 victory in the finals of the 2026 World Team Table Tennis Championships in London, marking China's 12th men's team title at the prestigious event.
Among the champions was Zhou Qihao, a 29-year-old athlete from Nancun village of Baiyun district, Guangzhou. This win marks Zhou's first world championship title, a significant milestone in his career.
Born in January 1997, Zhou began his table tennis journey at a young age, inspired by his father's passion for the sport. At the age of six, he joined a sports school, commencing years of table tennis training. His dedication and talent earned him a spot on the national team in 2012.
Zhou's rise to prominence was marked by standout performances, including a notable victory over Ma Long in 2017 and a series of impressive wins in national and international competitions. His 2026 achievements include a victory at the WTT Star Contender Doha.
As a proud native of Guangzhou, Zhou's triumph is celebrated not only as a personal achievement but also as a testament to his hometown's rich sporting heritage.
