Baiyun district, once struggling with a shortage of quality high schools, has emerged as a pacesetter in Guangzhou's upper secondary education, thanks to massive investment, smart expansion and classroom innovation.

With 11,764 high school places for 2026 — 2,014 more than last year — Baiyun now offers the largest supply of any district in the city.

Over the past three years, the district has invested about 700 million yuan ($103.32 millioni) in 11 public high schools, upgrading campuses and adding hundreds of new facilities. Private schools have also expanded and diversified, including a new Sino-Canadian program.

Beyond numbers, the district has revamped teaching through AI-powered tools and programs such as the "Qian Xuesen Class" at Peiying Middle School, the city's first class named after the renowned scientist.

Baiyun is pursuing the goal of becoming a premier education district by intensifying its teacher recruitment efforts, hiring 835 teachers holding master's degrees in the past three years.

"The good high schools in Baiyun now give families real choices,“ said a local parent.
