Two varieties — golden-fleshed Xinjinlan and red-fleshed Qinghongbao — are now ripe and ready for harvest at the Guangzhou Lyuyemeixiang Farm in Xihu village.
Xinjinlan weighs about 3.5 kilograms per fruit and has a distinct sweet aroma, while Qinghongbao weighs about 5 kg and has a fine, sandy texture. The farm uses pollution-free cultivation methods, and the watermelons are praised for their thin rind and abundant juice.
"It's my first time picking watermelons in a field – very interesting," said a local resident. "The fruits taste much fresher when you eat them right after picking."
Farmers suggest looking for withered vines to check ripeness. The finer the rind lines and the smaller the bottom mark, the better the quality.
Visitors can also book barbecue and group dining services at the farm. The picking season is expected to last about half a month.
