A "post-95s" PE teacher from Guangzhou's Baiyun district has made history. Gao Xiaobin, 29, won gold in the men's daoshu (broadsword) and gunshu (cudgel) all-around competition at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games — Guangdong's fourth gold medal at this year's Games.

Gao began practicing martial arts at just 5 years old and has now devoted 24 years to the craft. Growing up, his idol was Jackie Chan, whose films first inspired him to take up martial arts. Chan even invited him to perform at the Jackie Chan International Action Film Week in Datong, Shanxi.

In March 2025, Gao joined Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, where he teaches in the School of Sports and Health and coaches the university's martial arts team, becoming the institution's first faculty member to win an Asian Games gold medal while serving on staff.

For Gao, the victory is not just a personal achievement. He plans to share the story of overcoming difficulties during his preparation with his students. "I want my students to understand not only how each movement is performed, but where it comes from — and the culture and spirit behind it," he said.
